The story of the two men on the road to Emmaus is one of Pastor Chance’s favorite texts.
The story begins with two men returning home after Passover week in Jerusalem where they likely went hoping for a religious experience and undoubtedly left having witnessed much of Jesus’ week. The week came to an end, and they are leaving Jerusalem disappointed. They killed the guy they thought was going to change everything.
Life is often referred to as a journey, path, walk, quest. Oddly enough, if you want to call it that, Jesus has a tendency to show up on walks, journeys, quests, the road.
So, these two men are on the road to Emmaus, and Jesus shows up. Of course, they do not know it is Him, and they are lamenting about the way the week ended. “You fools”, Jesus says, and He gives the two “Holy Heartburn”.
Pastor Chance comments that a lot of times on this road of life you will face disappointment. What do we decide to do when this disappointment hits?
He leaves us with an observation that Jesus shows up on the road.
